Por más que se hable hoy de los derechos humanos, la retórica va muy por delante de la realidad, y los humillados y ofendidos siguen siendo incontables. En una descripción muchas veces citada, el Documento de Puebla fue recordando sus rostros: niños golpeados por la pobreza antes de nacer, jovenes desorientados por no encontrar su lugar en la sociedad... Son "rostros muy concretos, en los cuales los creyentes deberíamos reconocer los rasgos suficientes de Cristo, el Señor". No hace falta demasiada imaginación para ver en esos rostros el de Cristo, puesto que Él mismo vio pisoteada su dignidad humana: fue detenido por predicar un mensaje religioso: el juicio ante el tribunal judío fue una farsa: lo acusaron testigos falsos: lo torturaron sin piedad: y, por fin, le quitaron la vida de un modo infamante. En la pasión de Jesús quedaron violados todos los derechos humanos. Hay muchas obras sobre los derechos, pero la mayoría de ellas se limitan a una reflexión genérica sobre los mismos, o bien estudian uno u otro derecho concreto. Este libro tiene la particularidad de ofrecer una visión panorámica, estudiando temas de gran actualidad tales como el derecho a la vida, los derechos de la mujer, la libertad religiosa, las migraciones, los nacionalismos... Y lo hace, además, desde una perspectiva cristiana que combina la argumentación racional con los datos aportados por la Biblia, la historia de la Iglesia y el moderno magisterio social.

Luis González-Carvajal Santabárbara (Madrid, 1947), engineer, priest, and Spanish theologian. He is considered one of the most read Christian authors currently in the Spanish language.

He studied at the Menesian School in Madrid. In 1969, after completing his degree in Mining Engineering, he entered the Seminary of Madrid and was ordained a priest in 1974, becoming incardinated in the Madrid archdiocese. He holds a doctorate in Theology from the Pontifical University of Salamanca.

He was first a coadjutor and then a parish priest of various parishes in Madrid. He has also been a professor at the ESCUNI University School of Education in Madrid and general secretary of Caritas Spain. Since 1982, he has been a professor of Moral Theology, first at the "San Dámaso" Theological Studies Center, then at the Higher Institute of Pastoral of Madrid, and finally at the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University Comillas, Madrid campus, where he has been a Full Professor (equivalent to a professor in other universities), director of the Department of Moral Theology, and director of the "Comillas Theology" collection.

After retiring from the University (September 2012) he worked for six years at the parish of Our Lady of Pilar in Madrid, and he is currently the chaplain of the Santo Domingo el Real Monastery, also in Madrid, although he continues writing and giving lectures.
