In the Beginning begins with an allegory which readies the reader for the message of the novel. Reality and fantasy blend and heaven and earth meet while the protagonist, Buzz Bergbe, struggles with understanding where the meaning in life is.

At the very height of financial success, having penetrated the echelons of power and politics, Bergbe has failed to find happiness. Only falling off the fast track by falling in love awakens him to life. Bergbe's internal revelation and the resultant changes to his life cause a dangerous backlash from those who have followed him and counted on him being in their inner circle. As their world falls apart Bergbe's life comes together.
