En septiembre de 1944 las tropas aliadas avanzaban por Holanda y se disponían a cruzar el Rin para invadir Alemania; pero el desastre de Arnhem, la última victoria alemana, iba a alargar el conflicto más allá de lo previsto. Basándose en una amplísima documentación, que se utiliza aquí por primera vez, Antony Beevor no solo reconstruye la verdad de lo sucedido -muy distinta a lo que contaron hace unos años una versión novelada y una película- sino que el hecho de disponer de diarios y de testimonios personales le permite revivir la verdad de la guerra, a través de las experiencias individuales de los soldados en el combate o del relato de los sufrimientos de los habitantes de Arnhem, sometidos tres veces al pillaje y masacrados por los alemanes. Educated at Winchester and Sandhurst, he was a regular officer in the British army, which he left after five years of service and moved to Paris, where he wrote his first novel

His essays, translated into more than thirty languages and published in Spanish by Crítica, have been awarded several prizes, especially Stalingrad (2000), recipient of the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Wolfson History Prize, and the Hawthornden Prize, and Berlin: The Downfall, 1945 (2002), which has seen a dozen editions in Spanish
