La modernité a connu un développement important grâce à l'industrialisation, à la construction d'États-nations et au régime politique républicain; elle a utilisé la science et la technologie comme levier fondamental du développement et du progrès social. Cependant, elle a aussi montré des contradictions, des crises et des faits qui échappent au rationnel et qui expriment que l'irrationalité déborde à de nombreux moments la rationalité.Face à ces contradictions et à ces crises, divers courants et mouvements critiques ont vu le jour dans l'art, la peinture, la littérature et l'architecture, et dernièrement dans la philosophie, qui est apparue comme le postmodernisme (un courant littéraire) et qui devient maintenant un courant philosophique ayant la prétention d'avoir une portée civilisatrice, que l'on appelle le postmodernisme.
