Identificar la cultura producida por éstas con la cultura impuesta a las masas populares; dilucidar la fisonomía de la cultura popular; reconstruyendo la cultura oral; es parte del intento del autor. Ginzburg investiga; analiza; aclara; da nuevas interpretaciones al folklore; la demología; las tradiciones populares...; utilizando una metodología adaptada al nuevo enfoque. 'De pronto recordé que en la investigación utilizaba un método más morfológico que histórico. Reunía mitos y creencias procedentes de distintos ámbitos culturales; sobre la base de afinidades formales. Las vinculaciones históricas advertidas no podían guiarme porque esos mitos y esas creencias podían provenir de un pasado mucho más antiguo. Usaba la morfología como una sonda; para investigar un estrato inaccesible a los instrumentos habituales del conocimiento histórico'; dice Ginzburg en el Prefacio de esta obra.

He holds a PhD in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Pisa. An original historian, sometimes provocative, he has tried to demonstrate the limitations of certain aspects of traditional historical methodology and has established himself as one of the main representatives of the so-called "microhistory", of which The Cheese and the Worms (1976) is one of the most complete examples.

He has taught at the universities of Bologna, Yale, Harvard, Princeton, and California, and his works, which include The Night Battles, The Clues about Piero, The Night History, and Wooden Eyes, have been translated into about twenty languages.
