Esmé Weijun Wang is an American writer, essayist, and mental health advocate born in the Midwest, daughter of Taiwanese immigrants. Her work explores the intersections of identity, mental illness, and creativity.

She is the author of the novel The Border of Paradise (2016), a gothic family drama that was highlighted as one of the best books of the year by NPR and Electric Literature. Her collection of essays The Collected Schizophrenias (2019) became a New York Times bestseller and earned her the Graywolf Nonfiction Prize, the Whiting Award, and inclusion in Granta's “Best of Young American Novelists” list in 2017.

Wang has been recognized for her honest and nuanced approach to mental health, especially in her own experience with schizoaffective disorder. In 2013, she suffered from Cotard's syndrome, a rare condition in which people believe they are dead. This experience inspired her to found The Unexpected Shape Writing Academy, a space for writers facing physical or mental limitations.

In addition to her literary work, Wang has been invited to share her story on media outlets like the Today Show, NPR, and CBC, and has written for The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Flavorwire.
