La leyenda de Sleepy Hollow (1819) es uno de los cuentos más conocidos de Irving. Conocedor de la literatura romántica tan en boga en Europa, Washington Irving utilizó a menudo historias del folclore popular, especialmente el germa no, para americanizar leyendas de origen medieval. En este caso, el motivo del «jinete sin cabeza» sirvió a Irving para hilvanar un triángulo amoroso no exento de humor e ironía.
