A line on a map looks simple.

It may be no more than a thin stroke drawn between two colors, separating one country from another. On a page, it appears orderly. On a map, it can be measured. Governments can name it, guard it, patrol it, debate it, strengthen it, or attempt to control what crosses it.

But people do not live on maps.

They live in houses, kitchens, workplaces, schools, hospitals, buses, restaurants, farms, streets, deserts, and crowded neighborhoods. They fall in love. They raise children. They lose parents. They look for work. They wait for phone calls. They make mistakes. They become afraid. They hope.

And sometimes, without choosing it, they discover that a political boundary has entered their private lives.

The Line Between Us is a collection of thirty fictional stories set in the human landscape surrounding the American-Mexican border.

These are not stories about a border alone.They are stories about people.

A woman who crosses legally every morning to work and begins to wonder where she truly belongs. A child who discovers that a passport can determine whether a person moves forward or remains behind. A rancher who leaves water in the desert. A police officer who encounters a migrant whose story unexpectedly reminds him of his own family history. A mother who waits year after year for a daughter she cannot embrace. Young people who inherit questions their parents never managed to answer.

Some stories are about fear.Some are about work.Some are about crime and survival.Some are about family.

And some are simply about the ordinary human desire to live without constantly being reminded that one belongs on one side of a line rather than the other.

This collection deliberately avoids easy heroes and easy villains. The border contains people who do extraordinary things and people who do terrible things. It contains generosity and exploitation, courage and fear, law and desperation, opportunity and poverty. A person may be a victim in one chapter of life and responsible for another person’s suffering in the next.
