El Río de la Plata cuenta con una larga historia de trata esclavista y esclavitud, aunque no se tenga muy presente. Si bien los españoles nombraron el estuario por el mito de una cordillera de plata río arriba, el Plata no tenía metales preciosos. Donde sí se veía plata en metálico era en el comercio del Atlántico, en ocasiones ilegal, a través del cual se trasladaba la plata obtenida en minas de los Andes no solo hacia España, sino también hacia el Brasil colonial, Holanda, Gran Bretaña, Francia y otros lugares. De este comercio, la trata esclavista fue lo que dio lugar a las más complejas redes comerciales entre el Río de la Plata, Europa, América y África. En 1585, cinco años después del establecimiento permanente de Buenos Aires, su cabildo solicitó autorización a la corona española para introducir africanos esclavizados a Perú, el corazón del proyecto colonial español en Sudamérica. En respuesta, los traficantes esclavistas portugueses desembarcaron casi 45.000 esclavos en el Río de la Plata entre 1587 y 1640, cuando Portugal se independizó de España. Los esclavos representaron al menos las dos terceras partes del valor total de las importaciones que ingresaron a Buenos Aires

Alex Borucki is a Uruguayan historian and journalist specialized in social history, with a particular focus on slavery and Afro-descendant communities in the Río de la Plata. He currently works as a journalist at the newspaper la diaria, where he has published various articles on social and cultural topics

In the academic field, Borucki has made significant contributions to the study of slavery in the region. His work From Shipmates to Comrades in Arms: Black Identities in the Río de la Plata, 1760-1860 (2017) analyzes how Africans and their descendants in Montevideo and Buenos Aires created and recreated their social identities through shared experiences, from their experiences in Africa to their organization in post-emancipation times

Additionally, Borucki has participated in academic activities and conferences, such as the discussion organized by the Afro-Latin American Studies Group (GEALA) of the Ravignani Institute, where he presented his research on the slave trade to the Río de la Plata between 1585 and 1835

His work has been fundamental in making visible the history of Afro-descendant communities in the Río de la Plata and their impact on the construction of the social and political identity of the region
