A Paul Erdös (1913-1996) le gustaba hablar de EL LIBRO en el que Dios había escrito las demostraciones perfectas de todos los teoremas y del que un matemático sólo llega a descubrir una parte a lo largo de su vida. No es de extrañar, por tanto, que apoyase la idea de algunos de sus discípulos de escribir un libro que se le pareciese, y que colaborase con numerosas ideas y sugerencias. Como no hay una definición precisa de lo que es una demostración perfecta, los autores han seleccionado ejemplos entre los que hay ideas brillantes, formas geniales de resolver un problema y observaciones precisas. La selección está muy influida por Paul Erdös. Uno de los factores que han limitado la misma es que todas las demostraciones deberían resultar comprensibles para lectores con un dominio básico de las técnicas y conceptos matemáticos e incluso para los mejores alumnos de bachillerato.

Günter M. Ziegler (Munich, 1963) is a prominent German mathematician specialized in discrete geometry and combinatorics. He earned his PhD at MIT in 1987 and has developed his academic career in Germany, serving as a professor at the Technical University of Berlin and, since 2011, at the Freie Universität Berlin, where he has been president since 2018. His research work has been recognized with awards such as the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (2001), the Chauvenet (2006), and the Leroy P. Steele (2018).

Among his most influential works are Lectures on Polytopes (1995), a fundamental text in convex geometry, and Proofs from THE BOOK (1998), co-written with Martin Aigner, which compiles elegant mathematical proofs and has been translated into multiple languages, including Spanish as El libro de las demostraciones. Ziegler has also promoted mathematical outreach through publications like Darf ich Zahlen? (2005), bringing complex concepts to the general public.

Martin Aigner (Linz, February 28, 1942 – Berlin, October 11, 2023) was an Austrian mathematician specialized in combinatorics and graph theory. He earned his PhD at the University of Vienna and, since 1974, was a professor at the Freie Universität Berlin, where he played a key role in the development of discrete mathematics and computer science at the institution. Throughout his career, he received accolades such as the Lester R. Ford Award in 1996 and the Leroy P. Steele Prize in 2018, the latter shared with Günter M. Ziegler for their outstanding work in mathematical outreach.

Among his most influential works is Proofs from THE BOOK (1998), co-written with Ziegler and translated into Spanish as El libro de las demostraciones. This book compiles mathematical proofs notable for their elegance and clarity, inspired by Paul Erdős's idea of a divine book containing the best mathematical proofs. Other notable publications by Aigner include Graphentheorie (1984), Diskrete Mathematik (1993), and A Course in Enumeration (2007), all focused on discrete mathematics and combinatorics.
