Martin Aigner
Martin Aigner (Linz, February 28, 1942 – Berlin, October 11, 2023) was an Austrian mathematician specialized in combinatorics and graph theory. He earned his PhD at the University of Vienna and, since 1974, was a professor at the Freie Universität Berlin, where he played a key role in the development of discrete mathematics and computer science at the institution. Throughout his career, he received accolades such as the Lester R. Ford Award in 1996 and the Leroy P. Steele Prize in 2018, the latter shared with Günter M. Ziegler for their outstanding work in mathematical outreach.
Among his most influential works is Proofs from THE BOOK (1998), co-written with Ziegler and translated into Spanish as El libro de las demostraciones. This book compiles mathematical proofs notable for their elegance and clarity, inspired by Paul Erdős's idea of a divine book containing the best mathematical proofs. Other notable publications by Aigner include Graphentheorie (1984), Diskrete Mathematik (1993), and A Course in Enumeration (2007), all focused on discrete mathematics and combinatorics.
